Gary Turner

Gary Wayne Turner of Magnolia, Texas, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 7, 2025, at the age of 79. Born in Mexia, Texas, Gary was the eldest of four sons born to the late Royce and Evelyn (Henry) Turner. He graduated from Smiley High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army as a military police canine handler, patrolling base perimeters with honor and dedication. Following his service, Gary built a long and steady career in the steel industry, first as a heat treater and later as a warehouse procurement manager. In retirement, he found great joy tending to his property in Hockley, participating in church and Bible study, and serving with the Lions Club of Magnolia. A devoted sports fan, Gary especially loved cheering on the Houston Astros and Texas Longhorns. He also enjoyed fishing, reading historical non-fiction, and solving crossword puzzles—in pen! Gary will be remembered for his intelligence, quiet strength, and kind heart. He was a man of steady presence and simple gestures: a birthday card with a little something tucked inside, changing a car battery on a hot summer day, and showing up faithfully for birthdays, graduations, and holidays. As his health declined, his caregivers described him as “sweet”—a testament to the enduring gentleness that defined his spirit. He was thoughtful, humble, and always placed others before himself. A true gentleman, a trusted friend, a cherished father, and a loving grandpa/papa—his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy (Taylor) Turner, in 2003, and his son, Adam Kelly Turner, in 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Amy Miranda Turner Tinder; his grandchildren, Samantha Reese Turner-Navarez, Nicholas Bradford Tinder, and Brenna Paige Tinder. He also leaves behind his brothers, Phillip (Pam) Turner, Edward Turner, and Brian (Sonia) Turner, along with many nieces and nephews. Gary’s life was a quiet example of faith, family, and steadfast love. He will be deeply missed.
