Martin "Mel" Morrish

Martin Melville “Mel”Morrish Melville “Mel” Morrish, born in Detroit, Michigan, to Laurence and Frances Morrish, has peacefully passed away on August 27, 2024. Raised in Ferndale, Michigan, he attended Ferndale High School, where he distinguished himself in the Rifle Club, earning numerous awards and becoming one of their top marksmen. Mel’s commitment to service and personal growth was exemplified through his long-standing memberships in both the DeMolay and the Masons. Mel’s heart found its counterpart when he met his beloved wife, Linda, at a football game. Their love story spanned 60 wonderful years, 56 of which were shared in marriage, filled with cherished memories and unwavering support for one another. Mel’s greatest joy came from his three children and his grandchildren, whose lives he enriched with his boundless affection. Known endearingly as “Shampa,” he treasured moments of playing frisbee, building Legos, and engaging in “school,” a game that his grandchild fondly called him “Joey.” Mel’s proudest achievement was his devoted care for his family, which brought him immense fulfillment. His passion for engineering and design led to numerous patents and the design of his beloved home, “Little Rose Down.” An avid reader and nature lover, Mel found peace and pleasure in sitting on his porch, sipping coffee, and enjoying the serene beauty of his surroundings. He is survived by his cherished wife, Linda; his son Timothy Morrish and his wife, Joannie; his daughter Melisa Valentin and her husband, Dr. Leo Valentin; and his son-in-law, Dr. Ira Maine. He also leaves behind four adored grandchildren: Marcel Valentin, Jessica Morrish, Sophia Maine, and Isaac Maine. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Martha Potts, and a loving circle of in-laws, extended family, and friends who will remember him fondly. Mel was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Dr. Tammy A. Morrish; his parents, Laurence and Frances Morrish; his in-laws, James and Marian Gumro; his brother, Ronald Morrish; and his sister, Joan Caddy. A memorial service to celebrate Mel’s remarkable life and legacy will be held at Linda and Mel’s residence. Mel has been laid to rest at Plantersville Cemetery. In honoring Mel’s memory, we find solace in the love and joy he shared with all who knew him.
