James Towns

James (Jim) Carroll Towns went to be with his Lord on the morning of November 2, 2017 in The Woodlands, Texas at the age of 83. He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Peggy; his son, Stephen Towns and his wife Pamela; his son David Towns and his wife Holly; his daughter Brenda Shaughnessy and her husband Tom; his sister Lee Slaby; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren (and one on the way!). He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Tracey Towns, and his brother in law Dick Slaby. Jim was born at home in Bull Holler, Alabama, to Lee Towns and Dezmore Eller on September 22, 1934 and was the second of two children. In his early years, he would help run the family grocery store. He came to Texas as a teenager several times before he settled in Velasco, Texas in 1953. He was a star baseball player at Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas where he met his wife, Peggy Porter. Jim and Peggy were married August 6, 1954 at First Baptist Church in Freeport, Texas. Jim worked several jobs throughout his life, from TV repair to marketing and sales to manager, and even owned his own business a few times. He was able to fix any vehicle or electronic that was given to him. He took pride in his work and enjoyed waking early so he could read the paper from front to back and share the good comics and jokes with his friends and family. He enjoyed golfing, telling stories, singing in the church choir, rooting for all the Houston teams (for better or for worse), and spending time with his loved ones. He picked out the best birthday cards. He was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed cheering for his children and grandchildren in their extracurricular activities, such as sports, dance, plays, and choir. He was a Master Mason and a member of Velasco Lodge #757 for 58 years. Jim was a member of First Baptist Church in Alvin Texas for 30 years and Heights Baptist Church also in Alvin, Texas for several years, Jersey Village Baptist Church in Jersey Village, Texas for a few years, and recently found a new church home at Second Baptist Church in Cypress, Texas. Jim will be missed by all his family and friends who love him dearly and will always remember him as strong, funny, faithful, and a humble servant of the Lord.
