Hubert “Frosty” Hickam We gather together to celebrate and honor the life of Hubert Hickam (aka Frosty), a man who’s 97 years were filled with remarkable achievements, profound love and unwavering dedication to helping others. Frosty was born on September 12, 1927, in Oklahoma City, OK, and from the moment he left home at the age of 15, he began a journey that would shape the lives of countless people and leave an indelible mark on the community. In his early years, Frosty’s path was anything but easy. Leaving home at such a young age, he showed an independence and resilience that would define his life throughout the years, including serving in the United States Navy during WWII. His journey took him to North Dakota where he met his first wife and was blessed with three children. After moving to California, he met the love of his life, Barbara Gill, and they began a loving journey throughout the rest of his life. Barbara became not only his life partner but the person he viewed as his pride and joy and the source of his happiness, each and every day thereafter. Frosty was a self-made man and his career was both distinguished and impactful. He founded his own engineering record keeping company working with Boeing Aircraft. His skills and determination were further demonstrated when he transitioned into a career in public service working with Orange County CA Mental Health Services. There, Frosty’s dedication to helping others was truly shown. As a Director, he played a critical role in establishing the original methadone program in Orange County to support those struggling with drug and alcohol addictions. Frosty’s tireless work touched the lives of thousands, and he devoted himself to ensuring that people in need had access to care, support and hope. His leadership extended far beyond his professional career as he always looked for ways to make a positive difference in the world around him. As a proud 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner, Frosty found great joy in serving others, particularly thru the Shriner’s hospital where he helped with setting up care for children in need. His passion for helping was not limited to the work; it was woven throughout every aspect of his life, whether it was managing the career of Guy Mitchell, a singer and actor in the 60’s, or helping his neighbors, Frosty was always the first to lend a hand. He was also an avid and accomplished bowler, an enthusiastic karaoke singer and a lover of crossword and jigsaw puzzles. His sense of humor, warmth and joy for life were contagious and those around him were always blessed by his presence. In his retirement, Frosty moved to Prescott, AZ, where he continued to live his life fully, making new friends and cherishing those relationships. Later, when he moved to Texas to be close to his oldest daughter, Frosty embraced his role as the official greeter on the street of his neighborhood, always welcoming newcomers with a smile and a helping hand. Frosty was deeply involved with his church in North Dakota and California serving as a deacon. He also sang in the choir and helped the elderly with their life’s problems. His faith was a cornerstone of his life and it was thru his faith that he found strength to serve others and offer comfort in times of need. As a father, grandfather and great grandfather, he leaves behind in memory three children, two grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a loving fatherly relationship with Tiffany Gill. He touched so many lives and his memory will live on in the hearts of the countless people he helped, the family he loved so dearly, and the friends who had the privilege of knowing him. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that Frosty’s work here is done and he leaves behind a legacy of love, service and compassion, that will continue to inspire. May we all strive to live with the same courage, commitment and generosity that Frosty demonstrated through his long and impactful life. Rest in peace Hubert “Frosty” Hickam.
