Gregory Schutte

Gregory Lawrence Schutte, 66, of Houston, Texas, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 5, 2026. Born in Mount Kisco, New York, Greg spent more than forty years proudly calling Texas home. A New Yorker at heart with a proud Texan spirit, he was known for his sharp wit, unwavering convictions, generous heart, and deep love for family. He graduated from Maumee High School in Maumee, Ohio, in 1978, where he played football and wrestled. If you knew Greg, you knew he wasn’t one to sugarcoat things. He was sarcastic, blunt, quick-witted, and never one to shy away from giving his opinion. But everyone who knew him also knew something much more important: Greg had one of the biggest hearts you’d ever find. He loved deeply, gave generously, and would have done anything for the people around him. In fact, he wasn’t just the kind of man who would lay down his life for his family- he was the kind of man who would have laid it down for a stranger. Family was everything to Greg, and nothing made him happier than being Grandpa. His grandchildren- Isaac, Natalie, Caroline, and Ezra- were the highlight of his life. He loved teaching them how to use tools, showing them how to fix things, and letting them learn by doing, even if their mom occasionally thought they weren’t quite old enough. He loved telling them stories about his childhood in New York- playing hockey on frozen ponds, exploring the creek, and growing up outdoors. He passed on to them the same love of adventure, curiosity, and hands-on learning that he had shared with his own daughter years before. Greg had a lifelong love for the outdoors. Camping and trips to the lake with his daughter became cherished memories. He had a special place in his heart for animals, especially dogs, and believed children and animals deserved to be loved, protected, and cared for. Greg spent many years as a respected project manager in Houston’s custom home industry, where he earned a reputation for his knowledge, attention to detail, and eye for perfection. He believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing well. He loved fixing things, solving problems, and if we’re honest, he loved telling others how to do things “right.” He also spent a good portion of his life coaching young athletes in softball, baseball, and track. While coaching at St. Mark Lutheran School, he started traditions that continue to this day, including designing the softball sweater that eighth-grade players still look forward to receiving each year. His impact reached far beyond the field. He truly never met a stranger. A quick stop at the grocery store could turn into a conversation about steak selections, the best way to cook collard greens, or a favorite recipe. He loved sharing pictures of great meals with friends who appreciated good food as much as he did. To Greg, food was more than something to eat- it was a way to bring people together. A proud Texan and a proud patriot, Greg loved his country and held strong convictions about the values he believed in. He was raised in the Catholic faith, faithfully attended Mass throughout his life, and also studied at Bible Way Baptist Church in Houston. His family finds peace in knowing he is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Martin Schutte Sr. and Nellie Joan Schutte (née DeLaura), and his sister, Cathleen “Cathy” Schutte. He is survived by his daughter, Cathleen Parker (née Schutte), and her husband, Zephan Parker, of Houston, Texas; his beloved grandchildren, Isaac, Natalie, Caroline, and Ezra; his brother, Ed Schutte and his wife, Charlene, of Little River, South Carolina; his brother, Tom Schutte and his wife, Melanie, of Swanton, Ohio; his brother, Mike Schutte and his wife, Laura, of Chico, California; four nephews, two nieces; and his faithful bulldog, Betsy. Greg will be remembered for his quick wit, his unwavering loyalty, his willingness to lend a hand at the drop of a hat, his love of family, his stories, his coaching, and the countless conversations that somehow always found their way to football, food, or fixing something that was broken. The homes he helped build, the traditions he started, and the lessons he passed on live on, but his greatest legacy lives on in the family he loved beyond measure and in the many lives he touched along the way. Greg will be greatly missed. And just as he always told his grandchildren, he is loved to the moon and back.
